About my Art

.: Pastels .: Oil Paintings .: Art Archives

I have been painting in pastel, and sometimes in oil, for the past 25+ years.

My inspiration comes from the light and forms in nature, and the sense of calm those things create. I work with leaves because they capture those sensations in a small but complete way, and because I enjoy their malleability. Their changeable forms allow me to use them as abstraction—almost as a medium within a medium—incorporating fantasy while creating the illusion of realism. My latest work often includes themes of transformation and flight, exploring the idea of nature’s exchange of energy and life as an immediate and joyful experience.

Another inspiration for me is fine craft. I feel that craft is an essential component of art. It is important for me to take the time both to plan a painting and to make sure that painting is complete in every sense—composition, balance, color palette, finish level, quality of strokes… it should appear neither unfinished nor overworked. Quality of materials is also essential. I use only the purest pigments and archival materials in both creation and framing of my artwork.

My paintings are all original, one-of-a-kind works—never reproductions of any kind.

    Dear Shelia,
While looking at my friends blog site, she had a list of artists that she finds inspiring and among the long and (for me) uninspiring list was your name! I was ready to quit looking but gave one last click and your glorious work appeared! Your work is simply magnificent!
Your work should be worn and not left at home simply hanging on the wall! It even should BE The Wall.
I am usually not interested in pastels or the like because of my interest in ‘old style’ or antique types of images in my home and pastels have always been too ‘modern’ for me. But your work takes my breath away!
I will bookmark your site and when I need a look at something simply beautiful, I’ll look to you!
(Again. I simply love it, and wish I had your images on silk. Your colors and leaves SHOULD BE FASHION ART!
In Awe and with Best Regards,
    Parmalee

Parmalee, thank you. I’ve actually thought of somehow applying my imagery to wearables… I sew and I love beautiful fabric. Maybe someday. Thanks so much for your kind post.

Gifts that I chanced upon. You and your work.

    Blessings.

Found images of your work still lingering in my mind this morning and had what I think is an inspired thought, these should be used in fabrics. Have asked my sister in law to suggest domestic manufactures to refer to you but on reflection you might do better on your own if the idea appeals to you. Either way, good luck and good hunting!
