About my Art

.: Pastels        .: Oil Paintings         .: Art Archives

For the past twenty or so years I have been painting in pastel.  I am drawn to organic subjects, usually working with dead or fading leaves and flowers because of the character they gain as they dry and twist and become translucent.  Those forms to me are so much more interesting than their young, perfect counterparts. (Someday I hope to perfect this attitude toward myself, too, but I’m finding that a bit tougher.)

This past year I also picked up oil painting again, which I had put down shortly after college.  I have been working with similar subject matter in the oils, trying to create a seamless transition between mediums. As much as I love pastels, I have found it difficult to go very large with them due to available paper sizes and weight from glass. I love the oils for their flexibility in size, lighter weight and ease of framing. I expect oils, which do not have to be framed with glass, should solve certain problems specific to outdoor shows as well.

Generally I paint in a fairly realistic style, although with somewhat abstract, non-traditional compositions. I’ve also recently started a series of much more abstract pieces based on lunaria seed pods, which I hope to explore in more depth after I reach my goal of fifty oils.

I show in a few galleries, although I much prefer art fairs for the travel and the ability to meet my customers, and for the opportunity to meet and reconnect with other artists.  I usually show in five or six of these per year.  This year, however, I hope to increase that number a bit, since my artwork is now my only source of income.

I should mention here, as I do in my marketing materials, that I sell only one-of-a-kind, original works of art.  In the past I have sold a handful of giclees, but I no longer make or sell reproductions of any kind.

    Dear Shelia,
While looking at my friends blog site, she had a list of artists that she finds inspiring and among the long and (for me) uninspiring list was your name! I was ready to quit looking but gave one last click and your glorious work appeared! Your work is simply magnificent!
Your work should be worn and not left at home simply hanging on the wall! It even should BE The Wall.
I am usually not interested in pastels or the like because of my interest in ‘old style’ or antique types of images in my home and pastels have always been too ‘modern’ for me. But your work takes my breath away!
I will bookmark your site and when I need a look at something simply beautiful, I’ll look to you!
(Again. I simply love it, and wish I had your images on silk. Your colors and leaves SHOULD BE FASHION ART!
In Awe and with Best Regards,
    Parmalee

Parmalee, thank you. I’ve actually thought of somehow applying my imagery to wearables… I sew and I love beautiful fabric. Maybe someday. Thanks so much for your kind post.
